# How to read a Washington contractor record

> License types and statuses, the bond, the insurance, and what the L&I files leave out.

## How to read these records

### The registration

Construction contractors register; electrical, plumbing and elevator contractors are licensed. The 12-character
number is L&I's. The status is L&I's word: active, expired, suspended, re-licensed, out of business.

### Bond and insurance

For an active registration, the record shows the latest bond and the latest liability policy that are not
cancelled in L&I's files: amount, company, dates. “None found” means no uncancelled row in the file — check with
L&I before concluding. “Impaired” is L&I's flag that a bond has been reduced by a claim.

### Public works

When the same state business number (UBI) appears in L&I's prevailing wage intent filings, the record gives the
count and the address of that business's public works record.

### What is not here

Contractors registered as individuals, owners' names, phone numbers, policy numbers, infractions, lawsuits and
workers' compensation accounts.

AI labs pay businesses to record first-person video of everyday hands-on work — filmed by their own staff with a
